How to plan a surprise proposal in Cabo

Keeping a proposal secret comes down to four things: a cover story that explains the time and the clothes, transport briefed in advance so the timing is not your job, a photographer working at distance until the moment is over, and as few people as possible knowing the exact plan. Most proposals that get guessed are given away by an unexplained schedule.
We have watched a lot of these. The setups almost never fail. What fails is the twenty minutes before, when somebody has to get a suspicious person to a specific place at a specific time while acting normally.
The cover story
A good cover story is boring and slightly inconvenient. It has to explain two things: why she needs to be ready at a particular time, and why she should be dressed better than usual. Anything that sounds like a special occasion invites the question you are trying to avoid.
Things that work:
- A dinner reservation somebody at the hotel recommended, which is why it is at an odd hour.
- A sunset cruise you booked as a holiday thing, which is why you have to be at the marina by a set time.
- Drinks with a couple you met earlier in the trip, which is why she should not turn up in beachwear.
Things that do not work: telling her not to ask questions, being unusually insistent, or planning it for the last night. That last one is the most common mistake we see. If it is the final evening and you have been behaving oddly all week, she has already worked it out.
Getting her there at the right minute
The setup is timed to roughly forty minutes before sunset, and sunset in Cabo moves by nearly two hours across the year. That means arrival is not flexible, and being persuasive on the day is the weakest possible plan.
The fix is to take the timing out of your hands entirely. A booked transfer that turns up at a set time is far more convincing than you suggesting you should probably head off now. Where you are in a hotel, the concierge can be briefed so the story is corroborated by somebody other than you, which is worth more than any amount of acting.
Hiding the photographer
A photographer at distance with a long lens is invisible. The mistake is a photographer standing near the setup looking like a photographer. They should be in position before you arrive, briefed on the direction you will walk from, and only become obvious once she has said yes.
On a beach that means working from fifty metres or more. On a boat they board with the crew and stay out of the way. In a restaurant they sit at a table like any other guest. In every case they know your route in advance, because a photographer who has to move to find you is the thing that gives it away.
Who to tell
Almost nothing leaks through logistics. It leaks through a person. Keep the number who know the exact time and place as small as you can, usually one or two, and tell everyone else on the day.
This matters most when family or friends are joining afterward. They do not need the plan two weeks out. They need to be somewhere specific at a specific time, which is a much smaller secret to keep.

- An unexplained schedule. Any evening where she cannot work out why the timing is fixed will get questioned.
- Leaving it to the last night. It removes your backup if the weather turns, and by then she has had days to notice you behaving strangely.
